The competition was particularly fierce at this year's Garden of the Year award run by the Bedfordshire Times and Citizen and Biggleswade Chronicle, greenhouse enthusiasts might be interested to hear.
Winners of the large front garden category, Shirley and John Furniss told Biggleswade Today that they completely changed the layout of their garden over the winter in order to attract insects and bees.
"This season we completely changed our garden. When you go outside you just hear a constant hum of bees, which is lovely for the summer, it's just full of flowers," Mrs Furniss added.
After winning the best small garden award, Rosemary Catt said that she loves colour and fragrance in abundance in her garden.
There are a total of nine different categories in the garden of the year awards including best commercial display, best community garden, best school garden, best allotment and best young gardener, which was one of two new categories added this year.
