More Brits 'turning to DIY gardening'

16:31 24th June 2011

More people are working with their own garden rather than getting in professional help, a horticultural specialist has said.

According to Robin Williams, managing director of landscape and garden design firm Robin Williams & Associates, there has definitely been an increase in the number of people working in their outside space.

This is often as a result of the downturn in the economy, he stated, as homeowners look to save money and do more things themselves.

Mr Williams also said people turn to gardening because of its therapeutic qualities, while growing your own vegetables can yield results quickly.

Many people lose interest a little in summer when they go on holiday, he stated, adding: "Then as we come to the end of summer and early autumn, we get a bit more rain, people are back in the garden and we get that second rush of flurry as the flowers and foliage pick up again as we move into the autumn."ADNFCR-2584-ID-800599451-ADNFCR
