Nonagenarian gardener into local flower contest for tenth straight year

16:50 23rd June 2011

A 94-year-old Oxford woman has entered her balcony into her local annual gardening contest.

Victoria Baker has been a keen horticulturalist since childhood and she is putting the colourful hanging baskets at her home in Girdlestone Road into the Oxford in Bloom contest for the tenth year running, the Oxford Mail reports.

The nonagenarian has won a prize every year she has taken part and has no intention of throwing in the trowel just yet.

She said: "It's difficult for me now but I manage it and I do Oxford in Bloom every year. I just love it and I love gardening. I can't do as much as I used to, because I am so infirm, but I can keep it tidy."

Mrs Baker revealed that the secret to her success is planting flowers that bloom without too much work and watering them every single day.

Entries for this year's Oxford in Bloom close on Saturday July 10th. ADNFCR-2584-ID-800598122-ADNFCR
