Vegetarian diet 'has all the nutrients people need'

Greenhouse enthusiasts thinking of growing their own fruit and vegetables may be interested to hear that a meat-free diet has all the nutrients humans need "for every stage of life".
That is the view of Liz O'Neill, head of communications at educational charity the Vegetarian Society, who was speaking at the start of National Vegetarian Week, which started yesterday (May 23rd).
Fruit and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and fibre, all of which are essential for health.
All the protein people require can be found in pulses, seeds, nuts, soya products, grains, mycoprotein and eggs, Ms O'Neill commented.
Meanwhile, "omega 3 fatty acids are found in flaxseed, walnuts and hempseed", she added.
The expert went on to admit, however, that it is not easy for people who have been raised on a meat-based diet to make the switch to a vegetarian version.
Her organisation provides support for anyone wishing to do so, through a mentor scheme in which people can receive advice and support by email.
