Winter Garden opens in Battersea Park

Greenhouse enthusiasts may be interested to hear about the opening of a new garden in Battersea Park.
The Winter Garden, opened last week by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, is a laid back environment, reports Stephen Lacey in the Daily Telegraph.
He revealed that the centerpiece of the space is "a wonderful cluster of Persian ironwoods, Parrotia persica, which are leaning their python-patterned trunks in all directions".
This is presented in an oval of grey stone chippings and hoggin, replacing the old Victorian shrubbery, Mr Lacey stated.
Around it, limestone rocks and "yin-yang segments" of dark plants and grass complete the picture, he added.
Even though it will take a while for everything to come together as a unified space, the expert concluded, there are some nice combinations that could be copied in a domestic outside space.
The same publication recently recommended the Green Island Gardens in Essex, with its 20-acre triangular "land island", as a great day out for greenhouse enthusiasts.
