Replace a cracked flower pot 'immediately'

16:55 1st March 2011

Greenhouse and gardening enthusiasts may be interested to hear the opinion of one expert who has said flowers in a cracked pot must be transferred to a new home.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Helen Yemm responded to a reader question on the topic by suggesting it is important not to delay when doing so.

Juliet Warren wrote in to say the pot that houses her lilies has cracked and Ms Yemm remarked that they should be moved before the weather gets any warmer.

"Four or five bulbs will fit happily in a heavy pot about 12in high and wide, and should end up with as much compost above as beneath them," she advised.

The expert went on to state that it is best to scrape off the top three inches of soil from a plant pot each spring and replace it with a nutrient-rich mixture.

In a recent article in the same publication, Guy Barter revealed checking the chemical composition of soil is a great way to make the most of any garden.ADNFCR-2584-ID-800436187-ADNFCR
