Laying a carpet of spring bulbs 'can be costly'

16:22 21st February 2011

Greenhouse and gardening enthusiasts may be interested to hear the opinion of one expert, who has said creating a carpet of summer spring bulbs can be an expensive business.

In an article for Get Reading, Linda Fort said she had been impressed when she visited a famous garden and saw it had a covering of crocuses, aconites and snowdrops at a time before any perennials had started to grow back and the shrubs were just starting to bud.

Several years later, she still has not achieved the effect she wanted, but instead has a cluster of clumps.

"That leads me to wonder just how much needs to be spent on bulbs to produce a carpet - the answer being rather a lot," Ms Fort commented.

Growing hardy annuals in a greenhouse before planting them in the garden is a colourful way to brighten up any outside space, the Daily Mail stated recently. ADNFCR-2584-ID-800417740-ADNFCR
