October a great time to buy apple trees
13:43 8th October 2010
October is the perfect month for buying apple trees, according to expert Chris Smith, who owns Pennard Plants.
Specialising in heritage varieties that can be grown in containers, Mr Smith recently spoke to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) about how to go about selecting a tree.
He explained that his own personal favourite is Ergemont Russet, which is known for vigorously producing fruit that is ripe for harvest in late September.
The heritage variety is perfect for exposed gardens and growers who like to avoid chemicals due to its hardiness and disease tolerant nature.
Another old favourite is the Court Pendu Plat, which has a history dating back to the 1600s and was popular in Victorian times.
Mr Smith recently appeared at the RHS Autumn Harvest Show, which took place in London on October 5th and 6th.
The expert treated attendees to a fruit tree pruning workshop and was available to answer any questions that garden and greenhouse owners may have had.
