Get in the mood for vegetable growing
17:15 29th September 2010
Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts heading to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Autumn Harvest Show could get in the mood by watching some related TV this Friday (October 1st) evening.
At 19:00 BST, BBC 2's Gardeners' World will show expert Joe Swift looking ahead to the event, which takes place in London's RHS Lindley and Lawrence Halls on October 5th and 6th.
Mr Swift discovers that while vegetable growing is fairly easy, getting the greens up to competition standard is a different matter entirely.
Viewers will discover how the world of competition gardening can put pressure on growers that does not normally occur during their everyday activities.
Fortunately, Mr Swift can call on the help of Welsh expert Charlie Maisey, who has numerous tips on growing carrots, onions and beans, as well as dealing with pests large and small.
Mr Maisey is a regular at RHS shows and has numerous horticultural titles to his name.
In other news, Staffordshire's Trentham Estate has won a major European honour for the redesign of its Victorian gardens, the RHS has revealed.
