Harvest Show's apple tips
13:15 21st September 2010
Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts will be able to pick up a number of expert tips on growing apples at a forthcoming event in London.
Running on October 5th and 6th at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Lindley and Lawrence Halls, the Autumn Harvest Show is a celebration of food growing.
As well as apples, visitors can also expect a "banquet of chutneys, chillies ... pumpkins, carrots and more".
One firm exhibiting at the event will be Pennard Plants and expert Chris Smith recently spoke to the RHS about the team's plans.
He explained that the firm will focus its efforts on apples and take an apple folklore theme to help make the show even more interesting.
Mr Smith and his colleagues will provide pruning demonstrations and training, as well as giving attendees the chance to taste a number of varieties.
He will help provide advice to anyone who wishes at the show and even had some to share in advance for those planting bare-root apple, pear or plum trees.
"The ground should be prepared with plenty of organic matter (not manure) and a handful of bone meal. Plant the tree at the same level as in the nursery and stake it," the expert told the RHS.
As well as being able to see RHS Chelsea Flower Show winners at the event, visitors can also put their questions to industry experts and the RHS advisory team.
