Secret garden to welcome visitors
18:34 3rd June 2010
Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts are being invited to come and survey the work of volunteers working to restore a secret garden.
The Monmouth city centre site was once visited by Lord Nelson, where it is believed he shared tea with his lover Lady Hamilton and her husband Sir William.
Interested parties will be able to see the work taking place on any Wednesday morning until September, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) reported.
The garden had been neglected and relatively unknown for many years until a team of horticulturalists decided to restore it to its former glory.
A planting plan has been created with the aim of taking the site back to its Georgian heyday.
The work will also involve the rebuilding of the 19th century promenade paths and hollow hypocaust walls, which were used to heat the garden's fruit trees.
Those going along to see the work take place can do so from 10:30 BST until 12:00 on any Wednesday through summer.
In other news, the RHS recently hosted its Chelsea Flower Show, where garden and greenhouse fans were able to pick up hints and tips from the experts.
