Beware Jack Frost this May
19:10 14th May 2010
Jack Frost may still be lurking about the UK's gardens and greenhouses, growers have been warned.
Brits should expect frosts to hit their tender plants throughout the month of May and even into June, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) said.
While such events have not been recorded for the past 15 years, the organisation warned that 2010 could be the year they return, especially after one of the coldest winters on record.
Wrapping plants in horticultural fleece can protect them from frost and the most vulnerable varieties should be given a double layer.
Growers should not forget those in their unheated greenhouses as these are also susceptible to damage.
Things to watch out for are translucent patches on the youngest foliage, blackened leaves and wilted shoot tips.
Gardeners looking for advice from the RHS can visit its website, which is packed full of hints and tips for getting the best from your green space.
