19:15 29th April 2010
TV star Alan Titchmarsh has been named as the new president of a plant conservation charity, it has been revealed.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the media personality will take up the vacant role at Plant Heritage.
The position has been open since the sad passing of Robin Compton, who served the organisation for 20 years before his death in 2009.
Titchmarsh explained that he is looking forward to helping the charity continue its stellar work in protecting the UK's plant life for the good of gardeners, both current and future.
His position in the media may help to raise the profile of the organisation and attract attention to its efforts.
Chairman Professor Michael Alder said: "Alan has an extraordinary ability to reach out to people from all walks of life and share with them his passion for plants and gardens."
Meanwhile, garden and greenhouse enthusiasts may be gearing up for the famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which takes place in less than a month's time.
