Developing kids' knowledge of the natural world can be done in the garden and greenhouse, it has been claimed.
According to madeformums.com, teaching children about how things grow is a great way to develop their understanding and give them new skills.
Grow It Cook It With Kids is a new book by Amanda Grant and focuses on growing edible plants in a fun and educational way.
The expert has teamed up with the online resource to offer a number of hints on how to go about teaching children the wonders of horticulture.
She explained that growing herbs can be a good place to begin due to their relative ease of growth and usefulness in cooking.
Children should be allowed to smell and taste the plants before buying seeds or saplings to enable them to choose what they wish to grow.
The next step could be using the Royal Horticultural Society's new iPhone application, which assists gardeners in growing all kinds of fruit and vegetables.
