Olympic garden contract handed out
17:26 12th January 2010
A major part of the 2012 Olympic Park project will be constructed by Scandinavian firm Skanska.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the company will be responsible for much of the southern section of the site, including the creation of two gardens designed by the winners of a recent RHS competition.
Hanna Clegg and Rachel Read will see their designs turned into a reality and are currently working with landscape expert Sarah Price to finalise their designs.
Ms Price is also responsible for the creation of the project's centrepiece - the half-mile-long London 2012 Garden.
Skanska will plant thousands of trees and other horticultural species along the banks of the Thames, as well as creating a number of gardens and parkland areas on old industrial sites in the East End of the capital.
The London 2012 committee hopes that the green space will draw as much acclaim and attention as the renowned Bird's Nest Stadium in China's Beijing, which hosted the 2008 Olympics.
