Newspaper gives winter gardening advice

17:53 12th October 2009

Following last week's tip that garden and greenhouse enthusiasts reuse their old grow bags, the Guardian has published more horticultural information.

The newspaper had suggested Brits use their old grow bags to cultivate some winter salads in the greenhouse throughout the colder months.

Now, it has suggested that gardeners use their glass structures to protect fragile plants.

Glasshouse owners should give them a good clean and insulate the windows with bubble wrap, the newspaper advised.

This should create a stable and warm environment in which to keep less hardy plants.

One species that should grow through the winter without too many problems is the sweet pea.

The newspaper claimed gardeners should be sowing these seeds around now and added that those with mice in their yard can get around the issue by germinating the seeds on a piece of wet kitchen roll before planting them in a cold frame or pot.ADNFCR-2584-ID-19405188-ADNFCR
