Respected garden and greenhouse expert passes away
17:39 29th September 2009
The garden and greenhouse world is mourning the passing of a long-standing and respected horticulturalist.
Pam Schwerdt was an established member of the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) committee and had been given numerous honours for her services to the craft over the years.
The 78-year-old's obituary was written by the RHS floral trials assessment panellist and vice-chairman of the herbaceous committee Tony Lord.
Mr Lord knows her work well, having written Gardening at Sissinghurst - the attraction for which Ms Schwerdt was best-known.
She was joint-head gardener at the site with friend Sibylle Kreutzberger and later received an MBE and the Benetton Foundation Carlo Carpa International Award for Gardens.
The RHS bestowed numerous awards upon her, including the Victoria Medal of Honour in 2006 and the title of Associate of Honour in 1980.
Meanwhile, the RHS recently revealed that a number of new plant collections have been announced by Plant Heritage.
