Herb growing 'can save cash'

16:16 26th May 2009

People can save money at the supermarket till by growing their own herbs, according to an article in the Daily Mail.

Former Gardeners' World presenter Monty Don wrote that the price of a bunch of leaves can cover a pack of seeds that could provide an "endless supply".

"Many of our favourites, such as rosemary, thyme and sage, come from the baking hills of the Mediterranean and do best in poor soil," he explained.

Coriander, tarragon and oregano are all classed in the same category and do well in a sunny spot, Don added.

He said herbs are useful in cooking as a little goes a long way and he added they can grow almost anywhere.

The expert wrote of how he had created a raised bed using subsoil and grit especially for Mediterranean varieties.

Meanwhile, he recently told a newspaper reader that cutting back the bamboo spreading from his neighbour's garden would not harm the parent plant.

He explained it might even make it stronger and should stop it spreading further.ADNFCR-1545-ID-19186587-ADNFCR
