We Will If You Will scheme launched

13:13 1st April 2009

The government has teamed up with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to launch a new scheme aimed at getting the UK to grow and eat its own food.

We Will If You Will is designed to encourage gardeners to cultivate fruit and vegetables with the ultimate aim of holding a lunch on July 19th to give friends and family a taste of their home-grown produce.

It is the brainchild of prime minister Gordon Brown and is being backed by Garden Organic, the Eden Project, Landshare and the National Trust.

The RHS will provide horticultural advice and is encouraging experienced gardeners to nominate themselves as veg doctors to help new growers in their local community learn the necessary skills to grow their own food.

Officially launched on Sunday (March 30th), the campaign kicked off with a 42,000-piece display in London's Covent Garden.

The "fruit and veg invitation" was created by artist Clare Patey.

RHS holds a number of gardening events throughout the year, with its Cardiff show taking place between April 17th and 19th.
