School kids to get dream garden

19:26 26th February 2009

With the recession in full swing, gardeners should be reminded that they possess the knowledge and skills to save their families money for generations to come.

Growing your own fruit and vegetables can be a great way of saving cash and providing for your family and gardeners who equip their children with that knowledge will give them a good head start in life.

It is therefore encouraging to hear of a competition in Exeter in which primary schools were asked to design their own garden.

The top prize was for the ideas to be made into a reality with the creation of a garden based on the winning school's design, according to thisisexeter.co.uk.

However, judges in the Green Team Big Project contest were so impressed by the five entrants that each of the four runners up also received a cheque for £250 to help them create their own garden.

St Sidwell's School took the top prize and will now receive a sensory garden based on its winning design.

The judges cited the garden's simplicity and the fact that it would be maintained by the children as decisive factors.

Meanwhile, the Whitchurch Herald has reported that TV gardener Percy Thrower's daughter Margaret is set to give a lecture on gardening at the Wem Garden Club's next meeting.
