National Trust launches allotments scheme

While some may be lucky enough to have the space for a vegetable patch and greenhouse in their own garden, others rely on allotments to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
According to the Daily Mail, there are 100,000 people on waiting lists for an allotment plot in the UK.
The National Trust has now stepped in to help alleviate the pressure and cut the waiting lists.
In a new scheme, the grounds of some of the country's finest stately homes will be opened up to create 1,000 new allotment plots and community gardens.
Some of the plots will cost between £30 and £50 per year, while others will be free to use.
National Trust director general Fiona Reynolds explained that growing your own is becoming a major trend.
"More and more people want to grow their own fruit and vegetables," she told the news provider.
"This isn't just about saving money - it's really satisfying to sow seeds and harvest the fruit and veg of your labour."
Those with the space and looking to avoid the queues can speed up their own food production by investing in a greenhouse to help harness the sun's rays.
The number of allotments in the UK has fallen from 1.4 million in the late 1940s to just 300,000 today.
