Snow covers UK's gardens

17:54 2nd February 2009

Gardeners across the country will have woken up to see their domain covered in a blanket of white as snow continues to fall across the nation.

Aside from the chaos on the roads and the runny noses, the snow can also play havoc with outdoor plants.

Now that the snow is here there is little that can be done for the plants outside the greenhouse save from shaking any white stuff off of the branches to stop any unnecessary strain.

Once the snow subsides, the BBC suggests that gardeners can take a number of measures to help their garden bloom.

It suggests pinching out the tips of seedlings from autumn sowings of sweet peas in order to encourage sideshoots to grow.

Excess water can also be a problem in the aftermath of snow and gardeners should look to raise any potted plants above the ground to help boost drainage and avoid allowing them to become waterlogged.

Gardeners with a greenhouse may even consider moving their pots under glass to help protect them from the frost and snow.

Celebrity gardener Monty Don last month suggested that gardening in winter was a good way of shaking off the effects of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) - a condition that the TV presenter and writer has suffered from for many years.
