Sensory garden educates pupils

17:15 27th June 2008

A school garden in Yorkshire has been transformed into an educational green space to provide pupils with an engaging and informative environment, it has been reported.

Writing in the online pages of the Halifax Courier, sector commentator Brian Coates explains that Northowram Primary School was chosen by Yorkshire Water volunteers for its One Million Green Fingers scheme.

The sustainable gardens will include a sensory green space which features elements that relate to touch, smell, taste, sight and sound as well as providing information on the environment, healthy eating and water conservation.

Head teacher Katy Brierley tells the publication: "The children are very excited. It was their idea to create a sensory garden."

Flora in the green spaces will include lavender, bamboo, buddleia, sedum and wild garlic.

Sensory gardens have received much praise in recent months with healthcare provider Bupa's sensory offering receiving a gold award at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show.
