Proper preparation 'reduces garden injury risk'

A number of steps can be taken to reduce the chance of being injured while working in the garden, it has been asserted.

Kris Kiser, vice-president of public affairs at the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute comments: "We urge consumers to make certain preparations even before the lawn and garden products come out of the garage."

Horticultural fans should ensure that they know how to operate a piece of equipment - such as a lawnmower or edger - before turning it on, ensure they wear appropriate clothing for the task and keep other people and pets out of the area.

Eye and ear protection are also recommended, as is the avoidance of alcohol as it could impair judgement while working.

Meanwhile, financial service provider Lloyds TSB Insurance recently stated that gardens can lead to a range of insurance claims being made, citing fire damage from barbecues and the theft of clothes from washing lines as examples.
